John Utterton

John Sutton Utterton was the first Suffragan Bishop of Guildford 〔“Church History in Queen Victoria's Reign” Fowler, M: Whitefish Kessinger Publishing, 2005ISBN 1417973560〕 in the last third of the 19th century.
Born in 1814 and educated at Oriel College, Oxford, he was perpetual curate of Holmwood, rector of Calbourne and then the Archdeacon of Surrey〔(Surrey Timeline )〕 before his ordination to the episcopate. He died on 21 December 1879, and his successor was not appointed until 1898.〔There was a gap of 9 years between Utterton's death in 1879 and his appointment > ''Sudden Death Of The Bishop Of Guildford'' The Times Monday, Dec 22, 1879; pg. 6; Issue 29757; col E〕
